God's Math Cabinet by Michael Potter

Michael Potter's "God's Math" cabinet is a testament to the beauty of mathematics and design. Inspired by the recurring patterns found in nature and the divine representation of the circle, this piece seamlessly integrates the Fibonacci Spiral, the Golden Ratio, and the divine circle into a fully functional and visually captivating cabinet. The cabinet, crafted from rosewood, birdseye maple, and Cocobolo veneer laminates, measures 1219mm in width, 508mm in depth, and 1981mm in height. The project, which began in November 2019, showcases advanced lamination techniques and woodworking, resulting in a sustainable and visually stunning piece.

The fusion of steel, wood, and advanced lamination techniques brought "God's Math" to life. The cabinet, with its two doors and three compartments, appears to float in an ergonomically optimized location, showcasing the designer's dedication to both form and function. The project posed several challenges, including scaling up the mathematical elements to accurately represent the Fibonacci Spiral and incorporating a steel structure within the spiral itself. However, through meticulous research and experimentation, these challenges were successfully overcome, resulting in a truly unique and captivating piece.

Michael Potter's "God's Math" cabinet has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2021. This award celebrates the practicality, innovation, and professional craftsmanship of the design, setting a new standard for furniture design. As a new artist, Michael Potter aims to convey the order arising out of chaos in our world through a seamless blend of wood and metal sculpture, a vision that is beautifully realized in "God's Math."
