Revolutionizing Japanese Craft Tableware with Craftal

Craftal, a subscription service, is transforming the Japanese traditional craft industry by providing a platform for restaurants and households to access a wide variety of traditional crafts from all over Japan. This innovative service aims to address the challenges faced by craftsmen and restaurateurs, fostering a new environment for the sustainable use of traditional crafts.

The business model of Craftal was designed to solve the problems faced by craftsmen who make tableware and the restaurants that use them. By directly collaborating with chefs, Craftal develops highly usable tableware products, incorporating their feedback and experiences. The service offers more than 300 products, serving over 30 restaurants, 50 end-users, and involving over 50 craftsmen and artisans.

Craftal's unique approach includes a subscription model where users select tableware pieces for a trial period of three months, after which they can exchange or return the pieces. This circular economy model not only benefits the users but also ensures the maintenance and reuse of the tableware, contributing to sustainability.

Established in June 2019 in Tokyo, Craftal has expanded its services to address the changing needs, launching a B2C service in May 2020 to cater to individual households spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Craftal has successfully increased awareness and expanded its customer base, including unexpected demand from restaurants specializing in Western cuisine.

Craftal's commitment to preserving Japanese culture and craftsmanship has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, affirming its innovative approach and contribution to the cultural heritage and industry.
