Steel U: Redefining Industrial Office Furniture with Emotion and Reused Materials

Joey van Beek, a visionary designer, introduces Steel U, a distinctive bar table that transcends traditional functionality to evoke emotions and productivity in an industrial office setting. The inspiration for Steel U stemmed from van Beek's passion for industrial designs and the desire to create a workspace that embodies emotional connections. The table's unique features include a 70mm solid reused steel tabletop supported by concrete blocks, with the concrete legs being physically destroyed by the owner to infuse personal emotions into the design.

Constructed from 70mm S355 steel and concrete, Steel U is a testament to the fusion of industrial materials and emotional resonance. The tabletop, crafted from reused steel, is a symbol of strength and resilience, while the concrete legs, destroyed and sculpted by the owner, encapsulate personal emotions and thoughts. The innovative design process involved forging reinforcement steel and utilizing the oxygen cutting process to shape the materials, resulting in a truly unique and personalized piece of furniture.

Measuring 3220mm in width, 650mm in depth, and 1120mm in height, Steel U weighs 988kg and features a tabletop displayed under 10mm hardened glass. The concrete legs incorporate an inner steel shell to reduce weight, while the connection rods are made of reinforcement steel, adding to the table's industrial aesthetic and structural integrity.

Steel U's creation journey began in July 2020 at van Beek's home in Ede, The Netherlands, with the final realization of the design taking place in January 2022. The intricate process of crafting the concrete legs, which required a balance of demolition aesthetics and personal emotion, presented a significant creative and technical challenge for van Beek, ultimately resulting in a design that embodies fulfillment and inspiration.
