Yina Hwang's Utopia collection, inspired by the freedom of expression, will be presented at New York Fashion Week on February 7th, 2020.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yina Hwang's Utopia collection is a bold exploration of symmetry and asymmetry, influenced by underground music culture. The garments aim to break down the wearerâs restrictions for the freedom of expression, allowing individuals to embrace their unique spirits. Hwang's personal journey of self-acceptance while traveling the world in 2018 inspired the functional yet abstract garments, which embody her experience.
To create this collection, Hwang experimented with surgery tape to distort her physical appearance, leading to collages, prints, and silhouettes. The original prints and fabrics, including PU leather, Satin, Power Mash, and Spandex, form the base of the collection. The garments are available in US sizes 2 to 6 and feature transformative elements, allowing wearers to alter shapes by attaching/detaching fabric panels using snaps.
The project, which began in September 2018 and concluded in January 2020, was developed in New York and will be showcased at New York Fashion Week on February 7th, 2020. Hwang's research into underground music culture and diverse individuals' fashion choices laid the foundation for this empowering collection, overcoming challenges such as achieving the right prints on different fabrics.
Yina Hwang is a New York-based fashion designer and Parsons School of Design graduate. Her work has been featured in Vogue, and through her brand, she aims to empower wearers to express their individuality.
