The Union Church Lighting Design

Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd has unveiled the transformative lighting design for The Union Church, a historic building located near the Bund in Shanghai. The church, which was rebuilt after a fire in 2007, has been repurposed into a music performance space, with the lighting design aiming to create a "small and beautiful" spiritual environment while meeting the functional needs of performances.

The lighting design utilizes functional and characteristic lighting to protect the main structure of the church, incorporating innovative installation of luminaires. The main pendant light serves as a creative highlight, combining both lighting and acoustic requirements, and is fitted with recessed lights and candle-shaped lights to match the architectural style. Additionally, vertical lighting is designed to shape the space volume, while in-ground recessed wall washers with a narrow beam angle express the wall texture and Gothic arch.

The project covers a total of 410 square meters and was completed in September 2021, following its commencement in June 2021. The design team overcame challenges related to installation methods and acoustic requirements, creatively embedding thick acrylic panels on the pendant light to meet the needs of sound reflection to the stage.

The Union Church lighting design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence in lighting products and fixtures design.
