Broken Sovereign: A Fusion of Tang Dynasty and Malaysian Chinese Culture

Tan Wan Yee's Broken Sovereign is a captivating womenswear collection that blends the essence of the Tang Dynasty with Malaysian Chinese culture, reflecting the designer's personal story and societal challenges. The collection features innovative structures and shapes achieved through draping, with the bamboo print design symbolizing the CHOR 9 BAI TIAN GONG FESTIVAL, a significant event for the Hokkien community in Malaysia.

The unique properties of the collection lie in its representation of the designer's personality and the fusion of Tang Dynasty elements with Malaysian Chinese culture. Through recycling and collage ideas, along with draping techniques, old clothes are transformed into new designs, emphasizing the importance of preserving one's cultural heritage.

Realized through neoprene and suede fabrics, the collection consists of 5 looks of womenswear in size 38, featuring a mix of jacket shapes inspired by Tang Dynasty greetings and trench coat elements, symbolizing the constraint of free liberation.

Broken Sovereign was completed in March 2016 and exhibited in Malaysia, Dubai, and China Beijing, showcasing the designer's dedication to storytelling through fashion. The collection's underlying research delves into the designer's family background, cultural history, and societal issues, culminating in a powerful narrative that challenges the audience to remember their roots.

Tan Wan Yee's Broken Sovereign has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2020, solidifying its status as a trendsetting creation that embodies extraordinary excellence and significantly impacts the world with its desirable characteristics.
