Au Jie Min presents "Are We," a thought-provoking womenswear collection that challenges the impact of human activity on the marine world, aiming to raise awareness and inspire change. This collection was developed as a Mini Collection Module at Raffles University, Malaysia, from May to August 2021, and was showcased via Facebook Live.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Are We" is a poignant reflection on the detrimental effects of human actions on the marine world, drawing inspiration from the failed Biosphere2 experiment and the inherent beauty of nature. The collection features intricate, handcrafted coral-like ornaments and lightweight, silky organza fabric to evoke the fluidity and grace of the ocean. Each garment incorporates approximately 300 pieces of meticulously crafted coral details, symbolizing the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.
The collection's design process involved the innovative transformation of hard materials into soft, ethereal creations, emphasizing the fragility and resilience of marine life. By embracing imperfection and incompleteness, the designer sought to convey a sense of serene melancholy and spiritual longing, echoing the concept of WabiSabi.
Through the use of soft pastel tones and flowing silhouettes, "Are We" aims to awaken a sense of appreciation for nature's beauty while serving as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for environmental preservation. By highlighting the vital role of the ocean as a primary oxygen generator and the coral reef as a crucial habitat for marine organisms, the collection seeks to inspire a deeper understanding of humanity's interconnectedness with the natural world.
