Yang PENG's "Spark" is a 1,448 square-meter residential home in Changsha, China, featuring a contemporary, minimalistic design approach that maximizes natural light and spatial coherence. The house has been designed to reduce the number of partitions and minimize decorations, creating a powerful aesthetic impact. The four-floor house is connected by a dramatic twisting staircase that extends up to an attic, and large windows in the living room allow plenty of natural light to pour in and frame views of the outdoor garden.
To create this open-plan space, some partitions have been removed and transformed into a space for entertaining and relaxation. The coving of the ceiling is curved, forming a delicate junction between the wall and ceiling, and softening the character of the 3.4-meter high volume. The design features minimal white walls and ceilings, contrasted with dark timber floors in a herringbone pattern and decorations, creating a unique and visually striking aesthetic.
The "Spark" design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. The project started in September 2018 and finished in June 2019, overcoming challenges in processing structural curve surfaces and bespoke design elements to achieve its unique aesthetic.
