Open Village: A Cinematic Revival in Rural China

Shimu Wang's 'Open Village' is a stunning transformation of a rural cement plant into a dynamic cultural center, featuring a cinema, bookstore, and exhibition space. The design preserves the original structure while adding a colorful, polychromatic exterior and glazed staircase, creating a vibrant landmark in the Industrial Park of Creative Culture, Jiajiazhuang, Fenyang, Shanxi, China.

The cinema's irregular form and unique exterior design reflect the designer's vision to bring high-quality cultural resources to rural areas. The venue hosts annual events like the 86358 Short Film Festival and Lvliang Literature Festival, attracting artists and young people to the village.

Shimu Wang's innovative approach to the design challenges, such as the intricate glass staircase, has earned 'Open Village' the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its outstanding contribution to art, science, and technology.
