Puli: A Double-Cap Safety Pill Bottle

Qidan Yan's Puli is a revolutionary safety pill bottle that addresses the common issue of child-resistant packaging. The bottle features a unique double-cap design, with the outer cap connected to the inner cap by tracks. This innovative structure allows adults to easily open the bottle while making it significantly more challenging for children to access the contents.

Measuring at 80mm in width, 35mm in depth, and 98mm in height, Puli is not only functional but also compact and portable, making it convenient for everyday use.

Constructed using injection molding with HDPE, Puli's design ensures the utmost safety for children while maintaining accessibility for adults.

Qidan Yan's inspiration for Puli stemmed from the need to create a pill bottle that children would find difficult to open, while remaining user-friendly for adults. The bottle's design draws inspiration from the screwing process and the structure of a hip flask, incorporating a flat bottle body that provides a clear indication for opening while being easy to carry.

One of the key features of Puli is its interaction mechanism. When the bottle is closed, the inner cap and the bottle body are connected by a conventional thread, while the outer cap and inner cap remain disengaged. This design ensures that if children attempt to open the bottle, the outer cap will spin freely without moving the inner cap. However, for adults, pulling the outer cap engages the two caps, allowing them to be rotated together to open the bottle.

The project, which commenced in September 2019 and concluded in February in China, presented several challenges, particularly in determining the most suitable material and thickness for the outer cap to ensure it is difficult for children to open, yet manageable for parents.

Qidan Yan's exceptional design prowess and innovative approach led Puli to receive the Silver A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This accolade recognizes Puli as a top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable design that demonstrates outstanding expertise and innovation, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
