Skystation: Redefining Public Seating

Peter Newman introduces Skystation, a groundbreaking permanent installation at Canary Wharf, London. Inspired by the modernist idea of form follows function, Skystation is an interactive sculpture that also provides public seating, designed to fit the reclining human form and encourage contemplation of the sky. The seating it provides is similar to what NASA calls Neutral Body Posture, creating an opportunity for pause, reflection, and interaction within the public realm.

Skystation, cast in aluminium bronze with a brushed satin finish, consists of six segments that were sand cast and precision cut, then assembled on a stainless steel sub-structure on-site. The sculpture, measuring 4100mm x 4100mm x 675mm, can accommodate up to 12 people and is designed to encourage social interaction and engagement.

The design process involved real-world research with life-size seating profiles, tested by a large number of volunteers to ensure comfort for a wide range of individuals. Fibreglass prototypes were installed in various public locations, demonstrating the positive impact of introducing an interactive sculpture into the public realm, appealing to all ages and serving as a place-making element.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, Skystation was realized as a permanent installation using aluminium bronze, a material known for its resistance to corrosion, fitting for the redeveloped wharf of London. The warm tone of the material introduces a striking contrast to the cool steel that characterizes the district, symbolically associating with the sun and the sky.

Peter Newman's Skystation is a testament to his exploration of the human relationship to space and modernity, earning him the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2023. This remarkable design showcases outstanding expertise and innovation, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
