Designer Lia Jiyun Kim's "We Belong Here" is a top-making kit designed to promote cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity. Inspired by the unifying experience of spinning tops across diverse cultures, the kit serves as an ice-breaking tool in educational programs, fostering communication and collaboration among students. The project commenced on August 22nd, 2021, at Otis College of Art and Design and concluded on August 29th, 2021, showcasing during Otis Design Week on August 29th, 2021.
Understanding the importance of promoting equality and fostering a better world for all, "We Belong Here" encourages students to create their own tops expressing their identity and engage in friendly communication. The project was awarded Silver in A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation.
The top-making kit measures 11 inches by 17 inches, while the accompanying poster is sized at 24 inches by 36 inches. The project was a part of Otis Design Week, where students created their own tops and used them for a group activity to connect creatively with their peers. The project fostered collaboration and connectedness within the Otis College of Art and Design community, setting a positive tone for the academic year.
