FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chien-Hui Pai and Chun-Hung Yang's project, Rebirth, is a stunning retro industrial style renovation of a 25-year-old residence in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design team decided on a retro industrial style based on the client's love for vintage items and the wish to keep the original wooden furniture. The project was completed in May 2018 and received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design.
Instead of dismantling the structure on a large scale, the team integrated the client's collection into the new living style, creating a vintage, mottled touch to the atmosphere of the space. The design team kept the original furnishings, including the cabinets, and embellished them to suit the retro industrial style while also creating new furniture out of discarded hardwood, achieving a minimal yet warm atmosphere. The retro-industrial style was achieved through the use of Pandomo, plaster, hardwood flooring, hardwood veneer, and steel spray paint.
The residence, spanning approximately 82.64 square meters, consists of a master bedroom, two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and two bathrooms. The design team utilized the original form of Pandomo concrete, the coarseness of plaster, and the natural knots and color of hardwood flooring to shape the retro-industrial style. The space is rich in functionality, with the open dining and kitchen area featuring large amounts of wooden elements, creating a humanistic atmosphere.
Chien-Hui Pai and Chun-Hung Yang's Rebirth project is a testament to the fusion of different materials and colors low in saturation, creating a retro soft loft styled residence. The design team overcame the challenge of remodeling the old structure with modern techniques, integrating modern methods while studying the craftsmanship of 20 years ago. The result is a comprehensive design language that brings forth a different atmosphere, rich in functionality and vintage ambiance.
