Dongpo Theater Renovation Transforms Historical Landmark

Xin Hu Yuting Jin has unveiled the remarkable renovation of Dongpo Theater, located on the side of Westlake in Hangzhou, China. The project, which took three months to complete, aimed to remove the heavy historical trace of the building, abandon useless decoration, and return the architecture to its initial state, releasing lost space for a revitalized atmosphere. The theater, established in 1992, has been given a new lease of life, blending seamlessly with the bustling commerce around it.

The renovation involved reorganizing the hall space to create a plain and orderly layout, transitioning from the bustling downtown to a suddenly quiet lounge. The design features concrete fiberboard with vertical textures and strong stair railings, paying homage to the historical memory of the theater. The auditorium now appears more open, with concrete and black steel elements, along with firefly-like lighting, creating an ambiance reminiscent of ancient caves.

The project, covering an area of 4150 square meters across three floors with a building height of 22 meters, presented significant challenges due to its tight construction schedule. The team worked closely with various equipment suppliers and focused on timely drawing updates, material selection, and on-site adjustments to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
