Shih An Ko's Kawadoko Bench Brings Coolness and Comfort into Daily Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kawadoko Bench: A Design Inspired by Japanese River Platforms

Shih An Ko's latest creation, the Kawadoko bench, draws inspiration from the temporary river patios built by restaurants in Kibune during the summer. The design aims to evoke memories of kawadoko, bringing a sense of coolness into daily life. The bench is a unique blend of traditional Japanese architecture and modern functionality, offering a cool and well-ventilated sitting experience.

Inspired by the memories of kawadoko, the bench features long gaps between the seat, creating a cool and well-ventilated sitting experience. The rods that make up the seat are specially designed to ensure comfort, with flat surfaces for sitting and circular edges resembling bamboo, serving as handles when moving the bench.

Constructed using traditional tenon and mortise techniques and woodturning, the Kawadoko bench is made of white oak. The dimensions of the bench have been carefully arranged to achieve a friendly user experience, with a wider width allowing users to sit cross-legged or even lie down to rest. The height of the shelf is positioned for easy access, and the round rods serve as handles when moving the bench. Additionally, a foldable cushion can be used during winter to ensure comfort.

Shih An Ko, born in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan, is an architecture design major who took a temporary leave to delve into traditional craftsmanship and furniture making. His designs, made of natural materials, emphasize the beauty of nature, bringing daily life closer to nature. The Kawadoko bench was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that brings comfort and coolness into daily life.
