Biochal: A Revolutionary Approach to Urban Development

Samira Katebi's groundbreaking project, Biochal, aims to transform an abandoned sand mine in Tehran into a vibrant tourism recreation zone. The project, initiated in March 2019 and completed in July 2019, addresses the pressing need to repurpose urban threats into opportunities for sustainable development. With an area of 860,000 m2 and an average depth of 50-70 meters, Biochal is set to become a national park that not only enhances green spaces but also mitigates air pollution and the risk of flooding in the Kan River.

By repurposing the sand mine into a tourism zone, Biochal will provide a unique recreational space for citizens of Tehran, while also creating employment opportunities and attracting international tourists. The project's innovative approach involves private sector participation and careful management to ensure its long-term success. Additionally, the presence of protected wildlife within the park adds to its appeal and environmental significance.

Samira Katebi's visionary design is the recipient of the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design. This accolade recognizes Biochal's outstanding contribution to urban development, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology to improve the quality of life in Tehran and beyond.
