FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Legacy Meets Contemporary: The Haleiwa Chair

Melissa Mae Tan, an architect from Mandaluyong, Philippines, has unveiled the Haleiwa chair, a stunning blend of tradition and modernity. Inspired by the concept of balance, the chair seamlessly merges the pliancy of rattan, a material deeply rooted in indigenous Philippine furniture, with the strength of a solid metal frame.

The Haleiwa chair stands out with its sweeping curves and striking lines, creating a distinct silhouette that pays tribute to the rich history of rattan while making a bold statement in contemporary design. The chair, conceptualized in August 2019 and prototyped by October 2019, measures 640mm in width, 850mm in depth, and 830mm in height.

Constructed in Manila, Philippines, the chair's design posed several challenges, particularly in achieving stability without compromising its unconventional form. The width of the legs connecting the base to the seat and the placement of internal supports were carefully addressed to maximize stability while maintaining a visually appealing skeletal composition.

Melissa Mae Tan's Haleiwa chair has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2020, showcasing outstanding expertise and innovation in furniture design. The chair's versatility and unique blend of materials make it a standout piece, adaptable to various styles while offering comfort and visual impact.
