Totetsu Training Institute Wayfinding System

The wayfinding system at the Totetsu Training Institute is a unique and innovative project that sets a new standard for environmental design. Designed by Takuya Wakizaki, the system draws inspiration from the rail lines, which are the core identity of Totetsu Kogyo Co., Ltd., the company behind the institute. The design team utilized rail scrap for the facility’s name sign and incorporated rail-line motifs throughout the space to provide clear wayfinding and orientation cues for trainees and visitors.

One of the system's standout features is its ability to guide individuals through blind areas and narrow corridors, transforming inactive spaces into active ones. The rail-line design not only serves as a wayfinding tool but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the facility, capturing the company's personality with creative accents.

The project, which commenced in June 2019, presented several technical and creative challenges due to the characteristics of the space. The rail lines had to run through the building uninterrupted, requiring precise construction to ensure safety and functionality. The design team overcame these challenges by meticulously crafting the rail lines, curves, intersections, and branches, resulting in a seamless and visually striking wayfinding system.
