Modern Meets Rustic: Residential Loft Apartment

Located on the highest floor of a Singaporean block, the Modern Meets Rustic project by Edwin Chong is a stunning 147m2 loft apartment that seamlessly blends industrial, rustic, and contemporary design elements. The main feature of the apartment is a five-meter-tall herringbone patterned wood and concrete textured wall, emphasizing the double-volume space. The handcrafted application of decorative materials for the living room concrete wall and floor creates a seamless, unique finish. The open living area is flooded with natural light, enhancing the mood and ambiance of the space.

The kitchen underwent a transformation to maximize natural light and ventilation, with walls being removed to create an open-concept layout. A transformable table integrated with the kitchen island allows for flexibility in the space, providing options for gathering and dining. The use of Burmese teak stair treads and teak laminates for carpentry throughout the house adds a touch of rustic charm, while the choice of moss green for the kitchen color reflects the couple's style.

Despite challenges with the cement screed wall in the kitchen, the design team overcame unpredictable color variations and cracking by applying painting skills and sealant to achieve the desired finish. The thoughtfully designed space reflects the personality of the homeowners, who describe themselves as old souls in the modern world.
