Designing a Galaxy in Your Glass

Ladan Zadfar's Icy Galaxy is a unique ice mold inspired by the mesmerizing image of the Milky Way Galaxy. The design intentionally focuses on the forms created by minerals as water turns into ice, transforming a natural defect into a beautiful effect. This spiral spherical mold not only creates stunning ice spheres but can also be used for chocolate bars, cakes, and more.

The mold consists of a food-grade flexible silicone part and a plastic frame, allowing for easy use and creating a larger contact surface with the drink, cooling it faster while minimizing water usage. The project, led by Ladan Zadfar and Mohammad Farshad, was completed during the Summer of 2019 in Tehran, Iran.

This innovative design was not without its challenges. Extensive research was conducted to find the perfect balance of flexibility in the silicone material to ensure the desired results. The designers overcame technical obstacles to create a mold with the correct cutting point, ensuring ease of use and the expected form.
