Vivian Lu's Absinthe production design merges physics and scenography to create an immersive theatrical experience that challenges traditional boundaries.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vivian Lu's Absinthe production design is a groundbreaking exploration of merging physics and scenography to create an immersive theatrical experience. The project, first showcased in Beijing in 2019, toured around in Shenzhen and Shanghai in 2020, captivating audiences with its innovative approach. Vivian's aim was to experiment with different ways to enhance the audience's sense in the whole theatrical experience and create a different relationship with time. The project introduced the technology of a laser light sound visualizer to magnify senses in the whole theatrical experience, allowing sound to be seen. The oval stage represents time but can be interpreted as the milky way, Möbius band, and more, offering a limitless interpretation of the set according to the audience's understanding of the play.
Vivian Lu's Absinthe design is distinguished by the custom-made laser light gadgets and experiments with different materials to find the best one to be used on stage. The project required extensive research and experimentation, especially with the laser light sound visualizer, to ensure the visuals created from different sound frequencies went hand in hand with the general set design. The stage received great feedback and special mentions on review platforms, highlighting and praising the stage design and effects, and how it truly immersed people into the story.
Through the sound vibrations spoken from the actors, laser lights were distorted based on the frequency of spoken sound. The visuals that came out from the actors and actress' voice varied drastically due to the pitch of their specific voice. The actors rehearsed for months with the devices to create a specific imagery to go with the set design. Vivian's constant curiosity and awareness of her everyday surroundings have led her to break the mould of traditional theatre and challenge boundaries by exploring daring concepts. Her work has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, showcasing outstanding expertise and innovation in performing arts, stage, style, and scenery design.
