FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chieh-Ting Chuang, along with Martha Kriley and Yushan Men, presents Poro City, an innovative exhibition that repurposes milk crates into a dynamic and adaptable architectural installation. The exhibition, located in Culver City, California, is constructed with 1100 milk crates, forming porous walls that celebrate resourcefulness and adaptability. The exhibition opens from November to December 2022, showcasing the extraordinary potential of everyday objects.
The modular crate system was designed for easy and fast assembly, with volunteers constructing all the walls in less than a day at Helms Bakery. Poro City proposes a dialogue with the diverse communities of Los Angeles, using milk crates as a brick system that houses the exhibition without imposing a rigid boundary. This approach allows for various design options that can adapt to different spaces, making it approachable to a wide range of audiences.
Inspired by the ability of people to create the extraordinary from the mundane, the exhibition showcases the resourcefulness of utilizing milk crates as a building material. The bright and unexpected colors further elevate and transform the material, with each color dominating a different area of the exhibition space. The stacked brick pattern recalls the textures of breeze block walls, iconic surfaces of the LA landscape, resulting in a welcoming and vibrant exhibition in an array of vivid colors.
