Maryam Yazdanpanah unveils a collection inspired by the mesmerizing songs of humpback whales, handwoven with a traditional Iranian ikat technique
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Maryam Yazdanpanah introduces the Humpback Whale Song Collection, a conceptual fashion line inspired by the awe-inspiring vocalization of humpback whales. The collection, consisting of twelve looks including oversized coats, jackets, trousers, and genderless shirts, features fabric handwoven using the traditional ikat technique in the city of Yazd, Iran. Each garment carries a part of the main sound waves of the humpback whale song, symbolizing the echoes of their melodic communication during migration.
The collection's fabric is a handmade traditional ikat of Iran, embellished with the pattern of the humpback whale song, meticulously woven to capture the essence of the whales' remarkable communication abilities. The pieces are designed to be worn from day to night, offering a statement design with neutral shades that evoke a sense of calmness, akin to the flowing waters.
Despite facing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryam Yazdanpanah's dedication to bringing her vision to life led her to the city of Yazd, where she worked with a master of the ikat craft to realize the intricate patterns that pay homage to the humpback whales. The collection was exhibited online in Tehran in August 2021, showcasing the fusion of art, science, and ethical fashion in a truly unique and inspiring way.
