Transforming Water Infrastructure into a Public Sphere in Dangyang, China
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cao Xiaomao's innovative Qinglong Ting Landscape Pavilion reimagines the function of water infrastructure, revitalizing suburban living in Dangyang, Hubei. Situated adjacent to the Gonghe waterworks facility, this unique project aims to enhance the communal experience by repurposing the private enclave into a public space, fostering suburban revitalization and improving living standards in agrarian communities.
Constructed with a steel and timber framework, the 35-meter-long canopy incorporates a 20-meter-long atrium, promoting the act of lingering while preserving the site's natural elements. The design's inclined columns and elevated southern eave create a visually striking silhouette, giving the entire structure an appearance of levitation.
The project, which started in August 2021 and finished in January 2022, presents a new mode of utilizing, observing, and interpreting the environment, enriching the overall experience for visitors. The design deconstructs the conventional pavilion into essential structural components, shaping a continuous corridor and an elevated vantage point for skyward observation, engendering distinct yet harmonious viewing experiences.
This transformative project showcases Cao Xiaomao's sophisticated understanding of the interplay between constructed form and natural context, highlighting the potential of architecture to reimagine the relationship with the natural world.
