"A is van Os" Book Showcasing the History of the Alphabet

Autobahn presents "A is van Os," a visually stunning book that delves into the captivating history of the alphabet. The initiative was born from the work ethos of Autobahn, where text is considered as an image. Designer Rob Stolte was inspired by his son's learning process of writing, leading to the discovery of primordial forms within the alphabet.

The book showcases the development of each letter in four historical periods, visualized in vibrant colors for easy comprehension. Autobahn's meticulous approach includes hand-carving original letterforms in stone as a visual reference, with the cover featuring a tactile gravel coating. Additionally, the design team created three typefaces for free download, allowing readers to send secret messages using earlier forms of the alphabet.

The book's production involved a combination of print, paper, hardcover, and varnish techniques, resulting in a visually and tactilely engaging experience. With a width of 240mm, depth of 240mm, and a height of 10mm, "A is van Os" offers a unique and immersive exploration of the alphabet's evolution.
