Yi Xiao's Banyan Pavilion, a New Type of Convenience Store Model, Creates a Unique Public Space in Fuzhou's Historic District

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Banyan Pavilion: A Unique Blend of Architecture, Nature, and Commerce

Yi Xiao's Banyan Pavilion, located in Fuzhou's historic district, is a groundbreaking architectural project that redefines the relationship between architecture, nature, and commerce. Inspired by the century-old banyan tree on the site, the project aims to reshape the connection between architecture, context, landscape, and community activities. Completed in January 2020, this innovative design provides a new type of convenience store model influenced by e-commerce, creating an important public space within the historical district.

The project's unique strength lies in its strategic positioning next to a middle school and behind the ancient banyan tree. By opening the facade of the architecture towards the street, it forms a complete circular public space combined with the banyan tree, establishing a harmonious relationship between the inner space, nature, and the bustling streets. The project's realization involved retaining and reinforcing the brick structure with a steel frame, while incorporating folding sliding doors to establish a closer connection with the street. The use of permeable sticky stone on the ground ensures water for the banyan trees, while a raised terrazzo platform provides exterior seating for the shop.

Yi Xiao's Banyan Pavilion has received widespread acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically integrates experience and resourcefulness. This project not only serves as a store interior design but also emphasizes the significance of the banyan trees by seamlessly integrating architectural space with the street and landscape, providing a space for public activities and community engagement.
