J1M5 Boutique by Various Associates

Various Associates has unveiled the groundbreaking J1M5 Boutique, a retail space that redefines conventional store design. Inspired by the prototype of a single suitcase, the space offers a versatile and changeable structure, serving as a column, rail, wardrobe, fitting room, or display window. The boutique challenges traditional store concepts, catering to diverse functional demands with subversive design approaches.

The J1M5 Boutique is a fusion of the movable, flexible features of a suitcase with the essence of a multi-brand boutique. The design team meticulously considered spatial layout, circulation, color palette, and experiences, resulting in a unique spatial language that seamlessly blends logic with artistry.

The realization of the boutique involved cutting-edge technology, including cabinets capable of 360-degree rotation, flexible cloth rails, fitting room mirrors, and a complex ceiling system integrating moving tracks, spot lighting, and air conditioning. The lighting design combines ceiling light boards and PC frosted materials, creating a captivating ambiance.

The boutique spans 266 square meters and is located in Qingdao, China. It was conceptualized in April 2020 and completed in October 2020, showcasing Various Associates' commitment to innovative and functional design.

Various Associates is an architecture and interior design practice known for its research-based design projects. The studio, based in Shenzhen, China, focuses on enhancing spaces and developing material details using bespoke approaches. J1M5 Boutique has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting its outstanding and creatively ingenious design.
