Shany Dvora's Shany Abdalla Naji project seeks to revive a lost tradition through art, inspired by family history and cultural heritage.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shany Dvora's project, Shany Abdalla Naji, is a series of graphic works that aim to revive the tradition of name giving in her family, which was lost upon their arrival in Israel from Iraq. Inspired by 12th-15th century Hebrew manuscripts from Iraq, Yemen, and Morocco, the project weaves imagery into Hebrew calligraphy, exploring the significance of names in preserving tradition and culture.
The tradition, which involves naming a newborn and adding the names of the father and grandfather, was discovered by Dvora after finding her family's immigration papers. This revelation sparked her curiosity about the role of names in family ancestry and cultural heritage.
Using mixed media, the project consists of 4 works sized 50*70 cm and 1 work sized 75*70 cm, showcasing the unique blend of calligraphy, typography, and Hebrew influences.
Shany Abdalla Naji serves as a visual representation of the designer's exploration of her family's history and the cultural shifts that impacted their traditions. The project was realized in Israel between 2018-2019, reflecting the designer's personal journey of rediscovery and artistic expression.
Shany Dvora's work has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2021, celebrating the project's exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and its ability to evoke emotions and wonder through art.
