Xinwanxin Noodles, a 100-year-old flagship restaurant, located in Wuxi, China, has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending traditional cultural elements with modernist architectural thinking.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
As an inheritor of Wuxi intangible cultural heritage, the owner's strong demand for brand upgrading and image display led to the preservation of the original ecological features of the southern region of the Yangtze River along the ancient canal, such as the white wall, black tile, bucket arch, and upturned eaves. The silver wire noodles and sweet rice wine are the restaurant's signature features, transformed into a perceptible spatial image by the designer.
The restaurant, covering 380 square meters, integrates display, sale, kitchen operation, and guest seating to fully express and influence the various possibilities of products and space, enabling customers to enjoy diverse experiences. The design combines modernist architectural thinking with the regional characteristics, breaking away from stereotypes and established models, allowing the traditional catering brand to innovate in the modern era.
The project, which started in January 2019 and finished in February 2019 in Wuxi, faced challenges in artistic treatment of the structure and the utilization of the original glass patio of the old house. The design subverted the traditional management mode, upgrading to a new self-service catering model, and added a new retail area to lay a solid foundation for the development of the young market.
Tiao Ouyang, the well-known interior designer and founder of OYTT Design, led the team in redefining the restaurant's image, blending the artistic nature of appearance with the technical nature of the interior. This design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation in redefining tradition with modernist design.
