Pelin Erkuvun introduces Lay Chair, a sustainable and user-friendly flat-pack chair design, inspired by Scandinavian style and driven by environmental consciousness.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pelin Erkuvun presents Lay Chair, a sustainable and user-friendly flat-pack chair design, inspired by Scandinavian style and driven by environmental consciousness. The chair is designed to offer a new form and a simple assembly variation for flat-pack chair designs, with a focus on reducing its transportation footprint and improving sustainable values. The chair's unique layering of plywood layers allows for a simple assembly and disassembly, making it a versatile and long-lasting seating solution.
The Lay Chair is made from molded FSC certified Oak Plywood for the seat and backrest, with oak solid wood for the legs and chair structure. The design incorporates metal screws and wood dowels for easy assembly, and its dimensions are 448 x 510 x 799 mm when assembled and 448 x 525 x 155 mm in its flat-pack form.
The chair's assembly process is designed to be user-friendly, allowing for easy disassembly of the seat and backrest, offering the possibility of changing single parts and facilitating maintenance. This feature not only ensures the longevity of the product but also provides the option to customize the chair with different seat variations, reducing the need for purchasing entirely new chairs.
The project commenced in September 2020 and concluded in December 2020 in Milan, Italy. The design process involved extensive research on environmental sustainability, plywood molding processes, and minimizing assembly/disassembly elements to introduce a mono-directional and reversible process. The main challenge was to design an assembly process that reduces material use while maintaining a coherent form and stability, resulting in a user-friendly experience.
Pelin Erkuvun, a Turkish product designer based in Milan, is the creative mind behind Lay Chair. She holds a Master's degree in Product Design for Innovation and has a strong background in furniture design projects. Her work has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, acknowledging Lay Chair as a well-designed, practical, and innovative creation that meets professional and industrial requirements.
