Matthew Haseltine unveils the Outer Borough Lamp (OBL), a unique modular floor lamp designed to collaborate with other designers' pendants, blending high-strength concrete with steam-bent wood for a distinctive, eco-friendly expression of inclusivity.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Matthew Haseltine introduces the Outer Borough Lamp (OBL), a free-standing modular floor lamp that embodies a collaborative spirit, designed to support the pendants of other designers while standing on its own merit. The lamp's high-strength cast concrete base and double-leaf steam-bent wooden arm create a unique, eco-friendly design that embraces inclusivity and collaboration.
The OBL's high-strength concrete base is poured into a steel water-jet cut mold, with adjustable feet, electrical housings, and fittings cast in place. The oak-wood arms are steam-bent and shaped before connecting to the base with stainless steel spacers and black-oxide connectors. The lamp's electronics are installed with a computer connector inlet at the back and a standard outlet at the top, next to a switch or dimmer.
With an assembled size of 250mm x 305mm x 2450mm and a weight of 30kg, the lamp base and arm ship separately, allowing for easy assembly by two people in less than 5 minutes. The lamp's adjustable feet can correct for uneven floors, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The ongoing project is a result of extensive technical and social research, ensuring the lamp's eco-friendly materials and production process align with industry standards and consumer shipping options. The OBL is designed to comfortably support a wide array of designers' pendants, offering a platform for collaboration and inclusivity in the design community.
Matthew Haseltine, a senior architect and designer at OMA in New York City, brings his expertise and creativity to the design of the Outer Borough Lamp. With a background in architecture from the University of Michigan and Princeton University, Haseltine's innovative approach to furniture design and small creative architecture projects reflects his commitment to blending functionality with artistic expression.
