FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hei Hu Hall Incense Packaging

Renowned designer Jing-Yi Li has unveiled a groundbreaking collection of incense packaging, titled Hei Hu Hall, which reimagines traditional Taiwanese incense packaging with designs inspired by ancient auspicious beasts found in temples across Taiwan. The artwork features abstract lines and geometrical characters, creating a unique pattern that deviates from conventional designs. The project commenced in May 2021 and was completed in September 2022 in Changhua, Taiwan.

Departing from the conventional factory sales model, Hei Hu Hall represents a shift towards a self-owned brand, offering twelve distinct package designs based on five auspicious beasts prominent in Taiwanese religious beliefs. The collection comprises three series: Worship to Gods, Memorial to Ancestors, and Taste of Incense, each aiming to fuse art with traditional Taiwanese incense products, fostering a deeper understanding of Taiwanese auspicious culture.

The packaging utilizes symbolic emblems and unique auspicious symbols, with each box dimension and content carrying implicit blessings from Taiwanese religious culture. Hei Hu Hall Incense, originating from Changhua, Taiwan, has transitioned into a private-owned brand after over 30 years, aiming to sustain and promote the culture of religious belief amidst increasing online market competition.

The project involved extensive research into the cultural heritage of Taiwanese religious beliefs, drawing from sources such as the Chinese cultural classic Book of Changes, folk temple decorations, and varied auspicious folk blessing catchphrases spanning a century. The design incorporates elements such as the vase symbolizing peace and the Diospyros Kaki representing good fortune, infusing these cultural symbols into the packaging to preserve and disseminate traditional knowledge.

Hei Hu Hall Incense Packaging was honored with the Silver A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovation. The collection stands as a testament to the designer's dedication to revitalize the traditional industry and religious belief culture in Taiwan, attracting the younger generation to engage with this rich cultural heritage.
