Pavilion S: A Sustainable Showcase

Rooi Design and Research introduces Pavilion S, a sustainable furniture showroom, at the Shanghai International Furniture Fair 2019. Composed of 821 pieces of prefabricated market standard-size plywood, the pavilion demonstrates rapid assembly and disassembly within 48 hours, promoting eco-friendly trade shows and the principles of a circular economy.

Featuring a hyperboloid roof covered with semi-transparent tensile fabric, the pavilion's unique design allows for even sunlight distribution and a column-free interior, presenting a sleek and eco-friendly showroom space.

After the exhibition, the entire pavilion will be transformed into 410 sets of furniture for a nearby community, promoting sustainable design and community engagement.

Chief designer Zuoqian Wang and structural designer Song Wang led the project, overcoming challenges of limited construction time and cost while ensuring full recyclability. The pavilion's unique design blurs the elements of doors, windows, and walls, providing a relaxing space for visitors during the exhibition.

Located at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong District, the Pavilion S project began in September 2019 and was completed in June 2020, showcasing the commitment to sustainable design and community impact.

Rooi Design and Research, founded in 2018, is dedicated to creating "human-scale" environments and working with clients, contractors, and designers to achieve better living spaces.
