House in Toyonaka: Redefining Privacy and Comfort

Located in a residential district in northern Osaka, the House in Toyonaka project by Shintaro Fujiwara challenges the conventional notion of space and privacy. With a focus on creating a stimulating and beautiful space while maintaining utmost privacy, the design stands out in its approach to enclosed architecture.

The property, surrounded by closely packed houses and lacking outstanding views, required a unique approach to privacy. The limited openings not only contribute to privacy in dense residential areas but also make the change of time sensitively perceived, creating a serene atmosphere.

The project, which started in May 2016, faced the challenge of obtaining a space that does not feel blocked while limiting the openings. Through innovative design elements such as a glass floor, split-level floor, and skylights, the feeling of blockage was reduced, allowing the line of sight to pass at each part of the house.

Shintaro Fujiwara's design philosophy draws inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, particularly the tea ceremony room, emphasizing the comfort of small and enclosed spaces. The project was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation in redefining residential architecture.
