MareNostrum: A Wave-Inspired Residential Building in Quito, Ecuador

ECUADOR -- /DESIGN/newswire -- Nov 10, 2019

Designed by Aaron Leppanen, the MareNostrum project is a stunning 8-story residential building completed in 2019, drawing inspiration from the movement of the Roman fleets in the Mediterranean Sea.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wave-Inspired Façade and Sustainable Design

The MareNostrum project, named after the Latin meaning "our sea," reinterprets the movement of the Roman fleets on its façade, creating a unique experience for users. The building's design generates large balconies, extending the interior space to the exterior, while incorporating passive sustainability strategies such as natural light and ventilation. The 8,800 square meter construction area offers various apartment types, including suites, 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom, and lofts, along with social spaces like a lounge and green areas on the terrace.

The façade and lobby share a common design language, with the lobby featuring a combination of digital fabrication and artisan work. The unconventional lobby forms were crafted using a CNC-cut MDF structure and Colorado wood panels, showcasing a blend of digital and artisan construction techniques.

The building, located in Quito, Ecuador, features a reinforced concrete structure with steel deck floor plates, spanning 8 stories and 3 underground levels on a 1250 square meter lot. The project, initiated in 2016, was brought to life through a meticulous design process that focused on form finding through organic efficiencies, experimentation, and research.
