Architect Krista Watanabe Unveils Award-Winning Villa Design

Architect Krista Watanabe introduces Oiso Hillside, a distinctive residential villa nestled in the scenic landscapes of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The villa, awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023, is a testament to innovative design and seamless integration with its natural surroundings.

The villa's design is inspired by the surrounding mountains and hills, with the house elevated 4 meters above street level. The unique topography has influenced the multi-level layout, creating dynamic spaces that flow harmoniously with the environment.

Unlike traditional construction methods, the villa utilizes the SE structure, a Japanese Seismic-Resistant Method, to achieve an open concept and vast free space. This method, known for its safety engineering, utilizes a wooden rigid-frame structure, enabling the construction of expansive spaces at a lower cost compared to steel structures.

With a total area of 138 square meters, excluding the workshop and parking space, the villa boasts a 70 square meter deck area, providing ample space for residents to immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Architect Krista Watanabe's meticulous research and attention to detail are evident in the villa's design, ensuring seismic and landslide resistance while seamlessly integrating the residence, office, and workshop spaces. The interior exudes tranquility and elegance, with a predominant use of soft, natural materials such as wood, complemented by carefully selected antique pieces.
