Zhejiang Sci-Tech University presents the Balustrade Chair, a unique seating solution designed for temporary situations, inspired by human behavior and street observations.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Zhejiang Sci-Tech University introduces the Balustrade Chair, a revolutionary seating concept that challenges traditional notions of chairs and stools. Inspired by observing people's unconscious behaviors, such as leaning on tables or balustrades, this unconventional product offers a new way of sitting for temporary situations. The design team, including Xuelian Li, Shichao Wang, and Haipeng Zhu, aimed to address the need for a temporary resting solution that differs from conventional seating.
The Balustrade Chair offers two distinct sitting positions: one allows users to sit directly on the top, resembling a chair, while the other encourages a leaning posture, similar to leaning on a balustrade. This innovative approach to seating provides a unique experience for users, catering to temporary resting needs in a non-traditional manner.
Designed in Hangzhou, China, in 2019, the Balustrade Chair is the result of in-depth research and observations of public behavior. By analyzing the needs and behaviors of individuals in urban settings, the design team identified the demand for a new form of sitting posture that caters to temporary rest periods, typically lasting around 8 minutes. The chair challenges the public's understanding of traditional seats, as its primary purpose is to provide temporary rest for less than 30 minutes.
The Balustrade Chair's design also emphasizes the balance between form and structure, ensuring safety, firmness, and durability for users with varying physical conditions. This innovative approach to seating has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021, highlighting its outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and remarkable innovation.
With an industrial design patent, the Balustrade Chair embodies Zhejiang Sci-Tech University's commitment to pushing the boundaries of furniture design and addressing evolving societal needs. The university's Furniture Design Institute, comprising independent designers, professors, and experts, is dedicated to long-term furniture design, brand planning, and the transference of design copyright, with a focus on combining unique innovative thoughts with commercial design.
