Hsiang Hsieh's Dream On bar design, inspired by Van Gogh's masterpiece, The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, wins Bronze A' Design Award in 2020.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hsiang Hsieh's Dream On bar design is a commercial refurbishment project that transformed a narrow rectangular indoor space into an open-air night street scene, inspired by Van Gogh's masterpiece, The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum. The design features a retro-inspired color palette mixed with mystic bluish-green, connecting to the renowned painting and creating an imaginative open-air cafe atmosphere.
In Yilan, Taiwan, Hsieh hand-picked elements extracted from local streets and architectural materials of the traditional Yilan area to recreate the famous scene of the exotic, open-air cafe through this commercial bar refurbishment project. The design of the streetscape is infused with decorative windows, frames, and balconies, creating a modern transcreation with a touch of tradition.
The bar design uses 80% locally extracted materials, with a massive amount of recycled materials, emphasizing sustainability and reducing the negative impact on the environment. The space addresses the challenge of sound echoing in the narrow, long space by deliberately designing the wall to be uneven, avoiding acoustic wave reflection on flat surfaces.
The overall interior space is 72 square meters, featuring a corridor-like space with a rectangular bar and tables set at a specific height to encourage interaction and intimacy among guests. The project was completed in March 2017 in Yilan City, Taiwan.
The Dream On bar design by Hsiang Hsieh was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authenticates experience and resourcefulness. The design contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
