Virginia Ellyn Melnyk introduces Glow Globs, an inflatable lighting installation that brings abstract shapes to life with color-changing LED lights, sparking curiosity and imagination.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Virginia Ellyn Melnyk's Glow Globs project was inspired by the inflatable lawn ornaments commonly seen during holidays, aiming to create abstract organic forms that inspire imagination. The design, created using 3D modeling, features inflatable abstract shapes illuminated with color-changing LED lights, providing a soft glow through the nylon material. Each inflatable was meticulously crafted with 80-100 panels, sewn together using traditional and computational design methodologies.
The installation, initially showcased at the Blink Art Festival in Cincinnati 2019, invites interaction as viewers engage with the captivating lights and play in the shadows of the colored illuminations. The design, consisting of three unique inflatables, is deployable and can continue to be showcased at various locations and events.
Melnyk's research in sewing and three-dimensional designs, combined with her expertise in architecture, has led to the creation of this unique inflatable lighting installation. The project was recently recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in Lighting Products and Fixtures Design in 2021, acknowledging its outstanding creativity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
