Chuan-Chih Chang's innovative fire station design, "The Big Roof," blends seamlessly into the mountainous landscape of Keelung, Taiwan, offering a new approach to public architecture.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chuan-Chih Chang's "The Big Roof" fire station in Keelung, Taiwan, draws inspiration from the indigenous "mountain house" architectural style, seamlessly integrating the building with the local landscape and climate. The design features a large sloping roof that acts as a new layer of the mountain skin, providing unique spaces for both the building and the environment. The project, completed in March 2021, serves as a statement of the fire station's integration into the lives of local residents.
The fire station's unique design not only serves as a landmark but also blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment. Situated in the mountainous and rainy city of Keelung, the building's interface with the urban context provides visual guidance and natural shades for rain or sun, offering residents a scenic path to access the park, the east bridge, and the natural landscape.
Constructed with the local humid weather and earthquake considerations in mind, the fire station utilizes an economical and earthquake-resistant construction approach. The use of raw concrete formboard, self-compacting concrete, and mineral painting on the big slope roof top ensures durability and weather resistance.
At 4 floors high, with a site area of 1780 m2 and a total floor area of 2045 m2, "The Big Roof" fire station provides efficient office and living spaces for firefighters. The various balconies and openings offer stunning views and create excellent work and living environments for the station's personnel.
Chuan-Chih Chang's "The Big Roof" fire station design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2023, showcasing its practicality, innovation, and ability to meet professional and industrial requirements. The project stands as a testament to the successful integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
