Wey-Duan Luo and Tzu-Ping Chan's ERC Autumn Village is a revolutionary reception center that challenges the conventional concept of a reception area. The space, spanning 926 square meters, integrates a bookstore, cafe, and exhibition space, creating a multifunctional environment that promotes community engagement and cultural activities. The project, which commenced in October 2018 and was completed in May 2019, is located in Taipei, Taiwan.
The design concept is inspired by the diminishing presence of physical bookstores in the digital age. By blending various industries into one space, including a cafe and a bookstore, the reception center offers a unique marketing model for development projects. The space also accommodates exhibitions, lectures, and forums, transforming the traditional concept of marketing for development projects.
The innovative construction of the external brick wall, using H beam and metal parts to fix the inner part of the hollow bricks, creates a modern visual pattern. The steel structure building features wooden slab floors, while custom-made furniture, including lighting, seats, and cabinets, is crafted from recycled wood pallets. The design also incorporates a skylight courtyard and flexible elements, providing a welcoming and adaptable environment.
The ERC Autumn Village's unique features include a skylight courtyard at the center, surrounded by interlacing platforms with different floor heights, forming an open mixed-use space. The space is designed to accommodate various functions, including a courtyard, show house unit, cafe, kitchen, bookstore, VR room, and administration area on the first floor. The second floor features community activities areas, exhibitions, seating areas, forum spaces, and a terrace.
The circulation within the space is carefully planned, with two main flows that merge the real estate promotional event into the commercial space seamlessly. The design also includes a theme exhibition area, a forum space designed as stair-seating, and flexible layouts that can adapt to different functions and events.
One of the most significant challenges of the project was integrating a cafe, bookstore, and reception center into one space while ensuring that each business could operate independently without conflicting with the others. The design team successfully achieved this by using the bookstore as the main theme and incorporating the cafe as an additional commercial attraction, resulting in a harmonious and functional reception center.
Wey-Duan Luo and Tzu-Ping Chan's ERC Autumn Village has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2020, reflecting its outstanding and trendsetting design that redefines the concept of a reception center and its impact on the world of architecture and design.
