Prince John: Book Illustration by Mykola Lomakin

Mykola Lomakin's Prince John illustration project is a tribute to the timeless themes of honor, fidelity, justice, and love found in Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. Drawing inspiration from medieval art, including the Bayeux Tapestry and works by renowned artists such as Hans Holbein and Albrecht Durer, Lomakin's illustration captures the essence of the historical novel genre.

Lomakin's unique approach involves dividing the illustration into three parts, with the central portion unfolding the plot and the top and bottom parts enhancing the narrative and psychological connection. The use of paints on toned paper, along with the application of various techniques including watercolors, oil paints, and acrylic, adds depth and texture to the artwork, creating a visually striking representation of the medieval era.

Completed in 6 weeks between April and June 2018, the Prince John illustration is part of a larger art project consisting of 21 illustrations and decorative elements in the same style as the illustrations. Mykola Lomakin's dedication to historical research and attention to detail is evident in the portrayal of characters and items, overcoming the challenges of achieving historical accuracy.
