ZUP's historical and cultural block design, inspired by traditional Chinese waterfront towns, wins prestigious A' Design Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Renewal of Lu Xun's Hometown

Zhejiang University Urban and Rural Planning and Design Institute (ZUP) has unveiled its award-winning project, the renewal of Lu Xun's Hometown, which has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design. The project, located in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, is a historical and cultural block that restores traditional scenes, including waterways, historical streets, and bridges, inspired by the texture of traditional Chinese waterfront towns and cities.

The renewal of Lu Xun's Hometown is a tribute to the great humanitarian writer Lu Xun, known as the Mark Twain of China, and is designed to not only refine spaces but also to care for the interests of multiple groups, ensure social equity, and preserve the local lifestyle. The project's unique approach integrates historical and cultural preservation with modern urban development, meeting legal and regulatory requirements while addressing safety, fire protection, and traffic concerns.

ZUP's design team, led by Sang Wanchen and Shi Tuo, along with chief planners Liu Manyun and planners Yang Huiying, Wu Xiajing, Fang Junhang, Xu Jianwei, Wang Jiwu, Xu Juemin, Xu Guofeng, Yin Zhengwei, and Chen Jun, conducted extensive research on local history through books, archives, and interviews with local scholars. They negotiated with local residents to protect their interests and improve their quality of life, ultimately proposing a win-win solution for all parties involved.
