Flow Garden: Transforming Education with Innovative Architectural Design

Ximin Chen, in collaboration with EDO ARCHITECTS, has reimagined the educational landscape with the innovative "Flow Garden" design for the International Department of Beijing Private Junyi Middle School. The project aimed to address the challenges of overcrowded classrooms by repurposing the original basketball arena into a cutting-edge educational space. The design incorporates multifunctional activity rooms and communication spaces, fostering an environment for free discussion and collaborative learning.

Inspired by the concept of a classic garden, the "Flow Garden" design features a rich and zigzag spatial structure, creating playful rooms arranged in a dense and orderly fashion. The space offers multifunctional classrooms and shared areas, resembling a dynamic "sightseeing garden" with a combination of light, natural landscape, and staggered corridors and platforms.

The exterior facade showcases a blend of weathering steel panels, U-shaped glass, and glass curtain walls, incorporating bamboo trees to enhance the playful and rich aesthetic. This unique combination of materials creates a contrast that symbolizes the exchange of ideas and cultures between the East and West, embodying the essence of the International Department.

The "Flow Garden" design introduces light, sky, and natural landscape into the interior, providing a vibrant studying environment. The playful "garden-styled" teaching building, with its staggered arrangement and folded layout, encourages a heightened sensitivity to the environment, offering a truly immersive and engaging educational experience.

The project, which spanned from 2018 to 2019, is located in Beijing, China, and has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design, highlighting its outstanding creativity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
