Modern Chinese Armchair: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Inspired by traditional Chinese armchairs and Marcel Breuer's iconic No. B33 chair, the Modern Chinese Armchair by Jonathan Nieh seamlessly blends the elegance of traditional Chinese furniture with modern materials and technology. The chair, designed for both sitting and artistic appreciation, measures 765mm in width, 650mm in depth, and stands at a height of 800mm with a seat height of 420mm.

Utilizing CNC processing and plywood, this chair reimagines the traditional Chinese armchair, infusing it with a contemporary and organic aesthetic. The design process presented challenges, particularly in creating a structure that could support the weight of a person while maintaining the warmth and beauty of wood. The result is a fluid and seamless form, reminiscent of calligraphy strokes, that defies the typical angular shapes of traditional Chinese furniture.

Jonathan Nieh, the founder of Niehworks, is a passionate designer and artist dedicated to expressing his inner self through furniture and product design. His work reflects a commitment to fusing form and function with simple lines and minimal shapes, bringing quality and style to everyday items.
