Musiac, a desktop application designed by Chia-Min Lin in Detroit in 2018, is a groundbreaking music recommendation service that challenges traditional design thinking and empowers users to explore new musical territories.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Musiac is a music recommendation service that goes beyond data visualization to empower users to be more proactive in exploring new music. It utilizes a contour map to represent all musical genres in a single interface, allowing users to visualize the relationship across songs and genres in a 2D space. The innovative "Taste Bubble" feature separates the user's prior musical taste field from unexplored musical territory, enabling users to expand the scope of the recommendation algorithm by manipulating the bubble's outline.
Utilizing a hybrid methodology of research, framing, prototyping, testing, and reflecting, Musiac was developed through extensive user testing and consultation with industry professionals. The project overcame challenges related to the competitive nature of the online streaming service industry and the complex relationships of users' playlists to create a unique and ethical music recommendation system.
Recognized for its outstanding expertise and innovation, Musiac was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020 for its exceptional technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill.
