Introducing Nave: A Terracotta Tile System for Green Building Cooling

ISRAEL -- /DESIGN/newswire -- Jul 27, 2021

Yael Issacharov presents Nave, a terracotta tile system designed to cool indoor spaces in desertic environments, inspired by traditional cooling solutions and local needs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nave: Innovative Terracotta Cooling System

Yael Issacharov's Nave is a revolutionary terracotta tile system combined with water flow, offering a sustainable cooling solution for indoor spaces in desertic environments. Inspired by the work of Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, Nave reimagines traditional building methods to address local needs.

The system operates on minimal energy and water consumption, making it ideal for green building initiatives. With three variations - wall tiles, partition, and a totem vertical cooling body - Nave provides a tailored, local solution for climate comfort.

All ceramic bodies are hollow, locally sourced terracotta, manufactured using plaster molds and slip casting technology. The system's unique formula optimizes temperature, water use, and humidity, while preventing mold formation. Additionally, flexible joints are made from recycled rubber using injection molding.

Each wall/partition tile measures 250mm x 15mm x 500mm, offering a surface area of 3820 cm² for maximum efficiency. The tiles are assembled using steel rulers, similar to the assembly of roof tiles, while the totem bodies are stacked around a metal spine.

Designed to be automatic and fully controlled by an irrigation system, Nave requires minimal user interaction for day-to-day operation. Users have the option to adjust temperature and humidity goals, providing flexibility while maintaining climate comfort.

The project, which commenced in October 2019 and was presented as a thesis project in September 2020, was developed in Tel Aviv, Israel, and is intended for use in the Negev area, Israel.

Yael's extensive research involved exploring cooling mechanisms in plants and animals, traditional cooling solutions, and desertic architecture. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding contribution to sustainable design and green building initiatives.
