FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Karst: Modular Water Filtration Staircase

Chi-Hao Chiang's Karst is a groundbreaking modular staircase designed for Governors Island in New York, featuring a water filtration system that connects humans and nature. The staircase, inspired by the Karst terrain, allows people to see and hear flowing water, creating an interactive community for humans and water.

The staircase's unique design incorporates a water-filtering system that brings the sensation of nature into the house, with each module featuring a pocket for crushed oyster shells. These shells, composed of calcium carbonate, can react with acid rain to reduce ocean acidification by absorbing carbon dioxide.

Constructed from concrete and equipped with bags of crushed oyster shells, the Karst staircase measures 2032 mm x 5740.4 mm x 5130.8 mm, offering a sustainable and innovative solution for water filtration.
