Redesigned Ancient Book Recording Tea

Junheng Li, a designer from Dandong, China, has reimagined The Classic of Tea, the world's earliest book recording tea, using traditional materials and techniques. Inspired by the close relationship between tea culture and traditional Chinese Taoist culture, Li's design is a testament to the harmony between man and nature.

The book, entirely made and packaged by beech wood, features a central title carved with red copper. This unique approach pays homage to ancient Chinese culture, which was predominantly handed down through bamboo, trees, and bronze. Li's design beautifully captures the essence of tea culture, evolving from these three materials.

Production of this remarkable piece began in 2017 and concluded in Beijing in 2018. The meticulous process involved re-editing ancient books with Adobe Illustrator and using laser engraving mechanisms for the finished products. Li faced challenges in controlling the balance between laser engraving machines and paints, testing the process more than 30 times to achieve the desired result.

Junheng Li's dedication to preserving ancient traditions while infusing them with modern design sensibilities has earned him the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020. His work exemplifies outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and making the world a better place.
