Adamas: The Future of Urban Footwear

Hengbo Zhang's latest creation, Adamas, draws inspiration from unpolished diamonds and the future status of urbanization. The shoes, a synthesis of organic soul and ruthless technology, embody a high-capacity creature from the world of cyberpunk, offering a sharp contrast of forms for sensory stimulation.

The diamond-like angular sole of Adamas represents an impenetrable system, while the soft upper provides a sense of security, encouraging wearers to challenge authority and seek breakthroughs freely in the urban environment.

The footwear design, made using synthetic rubber and elastic fabric, features optimized materials derived from computerized virtual physical algorithms and tests, with one-piece molding for rapid processing and footbed stability.

The project, which began in March 2019 in Champaign, IL, and concluded in June 2019, has been exhibited in Beijing and Los Angeles. The design process involved innovative research and practice on outsole shape and soft/hard material fit, utilizing computer analysis to control material forces and improve upper wrapping.

The biggest challenge in the design process was supporting the upper using a structure that extends from the sole, requiring detailed attention to the side wrap structure. Adamas is a representation of the future urban lifestyle, with a classic frosted black color and clean geometric shapes that allow for versatile styling.

Hengbo Zhang and Wenxi Qi are the creators of Adamas, with copyrights belonging to them. The design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the A' Footwear, Shoes, and Boots Design category in 2022, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature.
